TREE
1996

At De Montfort University, Leicester, all music undergraduates were required to learn tuned percussion, meeting weekly to explore new compositions and arrangements written for the ensemble. I composed Tree with the intent of showcasing the ensemble’s rich percussive sonorities and rhythmic versatility, highlighting the expressive depth of the instrument group. The title Tree serves as a metaphor for the compositional process, with musical elements repeating and branching, creating a mesmerising effect. My instrument—the Musser bass marimba—provided the harmonic foundation and texture, grounding the intricate patterns as they evolved throughout the piece.
