Story

1996

music score for eight voice parts and synth/harmonium with optional percussion

Story is a mixed-media work combining music, video, and theatre to explore themes of growth, routine, and renewal through a richly sensory performance experience.

The work unfolds in three connected sections. Through a Wall of Flesh reflects the emergence and development of life, with musical and visual ideas expanding from simple beginnings into increasingly complex forms. Projected imagery and wordless vocal textures create an atmosphere of transformation and possibility.

The Profound Verse of Our Time turns its attention to the ordinary moments that shape everyday existence. Through overlapping spoken and sung text, the performers recount a series of familiar activities, revealing both the humour and significance hidden within daily routines.

In Pulling Out the Plug, the opening material returns in transformed form. Accompanied by imagery of a draining bath, the music revisits earlier ideas before gradually resolving to a final unison, bringing the work full circle.

Created during my undergraduate studies, Story explores the relationship between sound, image, and narrative, using simple human experiences as the basis for a broader reflection on the cycles of life.
