Romanian Folk Dances
1997
by Béla Bartók, arranged for mixed ensemble
This arrangement for the university department’s mixed ensemble brings together six of Béla Bartók’s settings of Romanian folk melodies: Jucul cu bâtă, Brâul, Pe loc, Buciumeana, Poarga Românească, and Mărunțel.
In scoring the work, the instruments were grouped in different combinations throughout the suite, allowing each dance to develop its own distinctive colour and character while making full use of the ensemble’s varied timbres.
