Music for Trio and Orchestra / Trio
1997
for orchestra and solo flute, clarinet and cello
Written for the De Montfort University Orchestra under the direction of David Lawrence, this work combines an independent chamber trio with a contrasting orchestral accompaniment.
The Trio, for flute, clarinet, and cello, was conceived as a self-contained work that can be performed either alone or with orchestra. Written in a light contrapuntal style across three movements, each movement highlights one of the instruments in turn.
The orchestral writing provides a more experimental contrast, combining graphical notation, texture-based writing, and a rhythmically driven central scherzo.
