Lithos
2001
for large wind ensemble
Created as part of my MA in Musical Composition at University of Huddersfield, Lithos is a large-scale work for wind ensemble inspired by the rugged landscapes of the Pennines and the region’s strong wind-band traditions.
The title derives from the Greek word for “stone”, reflecting both the work’s geological inspiration and its broad, block-like musical structure. Drawing loosely on the contours of the Pennine Trail between Hebden Bridge and Edale, the piece unfolds through a succession of contrasting soundscapes, combining lucid, flowing textures with spikier rhythmic material and rough-edged harmonic colours.
