Debra Page
Debra Page (born 1975) is a composer, arranger and multi-instrumentalist whose work spans choral, orchestral, chamber, jazz and multimedia genres. Drawing on influences as diverse as jazz, contemporary classical music and the European avant-garde, her compositions are characterised by their vivid imagery, strong sense of atmosphere and stylistic versatility.
Unlike many composers, Debra's musical journey began outside formal musical training. Fascinated from an early age by the sounds of the world around her-including the rhythmic pulse of her father's coach engines-she developed a curiosity for sound and musical structure long before receiving any conventional instruction. As a teenager she taught herself a range of instruments, became active in jazz performance, and began composing and arranging music independently.
Before entering higher education, she performed with the North Herts Big Band and developed a growing interest in jazz improvisation, orchestration and composition. She later studied composition at De Montfort University, where she explored both contemporary classical and jazz traditions, composing works including Variations for Clarinet and Piano (1995), Giant (1998) and A Walk in the Deep (1999). During this period she also founded and performed with her own saxophone quartet and became involved in a variety of jazz and contemporary music projects.
In 2000, Debra undertook an MA in Musical Composition at the University of Huddersfield, studying with Richard Steinitz and Christopher Fox. Her postgraduate work focused on contemporary and experimental composition, producing works such as Lithos and Saxifraga for the Firebird Ensemble.
Alongside her composing career, Debra spent many years working in music education, writing extensively for young performers and community ensembles. Many of these works were created for schools, festivals and local performance projects across West Yorkshire, reflecting her commitment to accessible and engaging music-making.
In recent years her focus has increasingly turned towards vocal and choral composition. Works such as High Flight (2018), Silent Night (2024) and The Oak, The Holly and The Robin (2025) have established her growing reputation as a composer for voices. Her latest work, In Her Own Words (2026), a setting of extracts from the diaries of Anne Lister for unaccompanied SATB choir, will receive its premiere at Halifax Minster on 29 June 2026.
